Roofing in Pueblo West

Pueblo West is a large unincorporated community, and for roofing that matters more than it sounds.

County, not city

Because it is unincorporated, permitting and contractor licensing run through Pueblo County rather than the City of Pueblo. Requirements, fee structures and inspection practice are not necessarily identical.

A company that works here constantly knows which applies to your address. A crew that arrived after a storm from two states away may well not, and “we pull permits in Pueblo” is not the same statement as “we are licensed to work in Pueblo County”.

Ask which jurisdiction licenses them, under what number, and check it with that jurisdiction. It is a five minute call and it is the local equivalent of the state register other places offer.

Roofs that age together

Much of Pueblo West went up in waves, which means streets where the houses were roofed within a year or two of each other, to the same builder specification, by the same few crews.

They are now the same age. A hail cell that finds one of those developments finds several hundred roofs with the same remaining life and the same builder grade shingle, and the resulting rush is why crews get stretched thin and why the company that can start tomorrow may be the one subcontracting furthest afield.

It also means your neighbour’s settlement is a poor guide to yours. Same street, same storm, different elevations and different policies.

Exposure

Open ground and very little to break the wind. That puts the emphasis on edge details, the starter course, drip edge and rake, rather than on the field. It is also why ridge caps are frequently the first thing to lift here.

Practical

If your Pueblo West house is still on its original roof, find out what the shingle actually is and whether the attic has intake ventilation as well as exhaust. Builder specification in this area frequently has one and not the other, and in this climate that costs years.
